What is a good GMAT score: percentiles and targets for 2026

A good GMAT score in 2026 is roughly 645 or higher on the current 205 to 805 scale, which puts you around the 86th percentile. A 685 is strong (about the 95th percentile) and 705 is excellent (about the 98th percentile) (Menlo Coaching, using GMAC data, 2026). But "good" only means something next to your target schools. A 645 can be great for one programme and below average for another.

Key Takeaways

  • 645 is about the 86th percentile, 685 about the 95th, and 705 about the 98th on the current GMAT (Menlo Coaching, 2026).
  • The average GMAT total is about 555 (Magoosh, citing GMAC, 2026).
  • Never compare a current score with an old 200 to 800 score directly; use GMAC's concordance table.
  • Your target should come from your schools' class profiles, not a single magic number.

How does GMAT scoring work now?

The current GMAT has three sections, Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights, weighted equally. Total scores run from 205 to 805 and always end in 5; each section is scored from 60 to 90 (mba.com, 2026). Because the scale changed, a 700 is no longer even possible.

What do GMAT percentiles look like?

A percentile tells you the share of test takers you scored above. Here are the benchmark scores most applicants care about:

GMAT totalApproximate percentileApproximate old-scale equivalentHow it is usually seen
70598th750Excellent; competitive almost anywhere
68595th730 to 740Strong; competitive for top programmes
64586th690 to 700Good; competitive for many strong programmes
About 555Around the middleNot applicableRoughly the average test taker

Percentile and old-scale figures come from Menlo Coaching, using GMAC's 2021 to 2026 data and its July 2025 concordance table. The average is from Magoosh, citing GMAC. GMAC refreshes percentiles every year, so check your score report for the current figure.

What GMAT score do top schools expect?

Look at the median or average in each school's class profile and aim at or slightly above it. For example, Harvard Business School's Class of 2027 reports a median of 685 on the current GMAT (Menlo Coaching, 2026).

School typeTypical target on the current GMAT
US programmes ranked about 1 to 7Around 685 and above
US programmes ranked about 8 to 25Around 645 to 685
US programmes ranked about 26 to 50Around 605 to 645

Bands are approximate, from Test Ninjas, 2026. Your exact target should come from the published class profile of each school on your list.

What about ISB and IIM Bangalore EPGP?

Neither publishes a hard cutoff. Both accept only test-centre GMAT or GRE scores (ISB, 2026; IIMB, 2026), and IIMB explicitly includes your test score in its composite evaluation. Aim at or above their recent class averages.

Do section scores matter?

Yes. Admissions teams look at balance. A 645 built on a very strong Quant and a weak Verbal reads differently from a balanced 645. If you are targeting finance or analytics roles, a strong Quant score matters even more.

In my view, your GMAT score is the most important number in your application that you can still change. Start your free mock today, so you know exactly where you stand.

How should you set your own target score?

  • List 5 to 8 target schools and note each one's median or average GMAT.

  • Aim slightly above the median if the rest of your profile is average.

  • Check scholarship data. Higher scores often help with merit awards.

  • Take a diagnostic mock to see the size of your gap.

So, what is a good GMAT score for you?

A good score is one that puts you at or above the average for the schools you want. For most strong programmes, that means 645 or higher; for the most competitive, 685 and above.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good GMAT score?

On the current GMAT, 645 (about the 86th percentile) is widely treated as good, 685 (about the 95th) as strong, and 705 (about the 98th) as excellent. The right target depends on your schools.

What is the average GMAT score?

Magoosh, citing GMAC, puts the current average total score at about 555 on the 205 to 805 scale.

Is 645 on the GMAT Focus the same as 700 on the old GMAT?

They sit at about the same percentile. GMAC advises against comparing the two scales directly, so use its official concordance table.

What GMAT score do I need for ISB?

ISB does not publish a cutoff. Aim at or above the class average and submit a test-centre score, since ISB accepts only test-centre GMAT or GRE results.

Do section scores matter, or only the total?

Both matter. Schools look at your Quant, Verbal, and Data Insights scores to judge balance, so a very weak section can raise questions even with a good total.
